Juniper Chrystal Halliday
The all-new Juniper Chrystal Halliday in Karrinyup will deliver 120 much needed residential aged care beds to Perth’s north-east corridor, where there is currently a growing shortage of beds.
The first residents are set to move in on 14 August 2019.
A reported $35.5 million investment to provide improved services for older residents, Juniper Chrystal Halliday was designed by T&Z Architects and constructed by FIRM Construction.
The modern four-storey building is set back from the street, with earthy colours blending its majesticity into existing streetscape and greenery from the mature locality.
The entry into the building is emphasized by earthy wood grain panels portraying a relaxing and comforting interior.
The vast volume of the central foyer is articulated by high ceilings and window panels looking out into aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor spaces.
This modern contemporary decor flows from the foyer to other parts of the building and accentuated in lift lobbies, activity rooms and hallways.
Cosy living spaces are located on every level, as well as restaurant style dining halls. Residents enjoy spacious private rooms.
Carpeted corridors are thoughtfully large and wide to accommodate mobility-assisting equipment.
Coastal views and greenery can be enjoyed from large verandas with some resident rooms offering views to the ocean.
A dementia wing provides a welcoming and caring environment for residents, families and staff with spaces that are aesthetically pleasing, safe and functional.
Equipment solutions for next-generation residential aged care
Juniper is well recognised for its forward thinking and innovative approach to aged care.
The traditional clinical-focussed residential aged care model is no longer relevant in the modern world we live in today. The provision of next generation residential aged care in Australia is undergoing massive and rapid change, involving aged care providers to rethink their methods of care delivery that has dominated the industry for years.
Next generation residential aged care promotes wellness and quality of life enjoyed by people in care. Person-centred care is delivered through a multi-disciplinary team to achieve better wellness and health outcomes for residents.
To achieve this, the Juniper Chrystal Halliday project involved careful clinical considerations during the equipment selection process to ensure that functional and innovative features of furniture and equipment respond effectively to both individual resident and caregiver needs.
Resident Rooms
A resident’s room is the most lived-in room for someone who becomes care-dependent due to age or illness. Due to the significant amount of time a resident may need to reside in bed, comfort and functionality of the bed plays a particularly important role in making everyday life as comfortable and worth living as possible.
Award-winning aged care beds from Wissner Bosserhoff‘s Sentida range were selected to deliver:
- Resident and caregiver safety
- Falls prevention
- Pressure injury prevention
- Dementia care
- Functional independence and mobility
- Continence care and
- Ease of staff care requirements
These beds featuring concealed mobility side guards and wood grain laminates, remove the clinical feel of a traditional nursing care bed and provides a homely feel for the resident.
A simple to use remote control featuring large pictured buttons to profile the bed promotes increased resident function and autonomy, motivating independence. This generates a positive impact on the wellness of the individual as a whole.
Matching bedside cabinets and over bed/chair tables were custom made to suit the aesthetics of the resident rooms.
A range of world-class pressure care mattresses from Care of Sweden were carefully selected to aid in pressure injury prevention and treatment and to provide resident comfort.
Everyday Living and Mobility
At Juniper Chrystal Halliday, a portable ceiling hoist system is neatly installed in every room to promote the safe and dignified transfer and repositioning of immobile residents. Ceiling hoists dramatically reduce injuries resulting from the handling of residents in residential aged care.
Shower Chairs and Tilt in Space Shower commodes from JUVOcare were selected to assist with resident’s showering and toileting needs. Manufactured using Grade 304 stainless steel, these durable commodes are designed to withstand extensive wet area use. They are highly adaptable commodes designed to be easily custom configured to suit the needs of individual users.
A selection of walking frames, seat walkers, durable wheelchairs and other mobility aids were selected to assist with resident mobility.
Regency care chairs were selected for their superior pressure management gel seating system and positioning features against traditional comfort day chairs filled with air comfort bladders that create unstable seating surfaces if not regularly inflated to provide the optimal pressure relief.
A range of suitable bariatric equipment was also selected to safely accommodate larger residents.
Equipment Training
Equipment training for care staff was conducted on 22 July 2019 by Unicare Health’s clinical educator and trainer, Annette Terranova, who has over 30 years of experience as a clinician and consultant within the aged care sector. Annette has significant experience in prescribing products to promote safe and effective manual handling, seating and positioning, falls prevention, dementia care, mobility and pressure injury prevention, and has assisted hundreds of therapists and clinicians with education in these areas and prescribing the optimal equipment solution for specific needs.
Annette compared different types of mobility equipment and talked about their features and suitability for different resident needs. She also provided training in seating and positioning techniques to promote circulatory benefits, rehabilitation needs, posture support and good pressure care practices.
Annette conducted training on the Sentida aged care beds and showed care givers how to profile the beds to empower them with the skills necessary to provide optimal comfort, pressure care and good posture for residents. Care givers were also taught how to use the mobility features and intelligent sensors on the bed to prevent falls, encourage independent mobility, prevent pressure injuries, assist with improved continence practices and more.
