Bathroom Mobility & Modification Training in Perth: Building Clinical Confidence in Practice

Confident Bathroom Mobility & Modification Practice
- A dynamic professional development day for confident bathroom access decisions
Wednesday, 25 March 2026
Technology Park Function Centre, Bentley

On 25 March 2026, Unicare Health brought together Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in Perth for a full learning day focused on bathroom mobility, assistive technology, and home modifications.

Held at the Technology Park Function Centre in Bentley, the workshop was designed to strengthen clinical confidence in one of the most complex and high-risk areas of practice: the bathroom environment.

The day opened with a clinically grounded session led by Crystal Chan, Unicare Health’s Focused Educator in Bathroom Mobility Solutions.

Crystal invited the room to consider the full scope of tasks completed on a shower commode. This focussed on understanding the person, their routine, and their environment.

From there, the session moved through key considerations such as measuring for different body shapes, navigating varied bathroom layouts, and balancing posture, pressure care, and safety.

The Juvo shower commode range was explored in detail, demonstrating how seating options, accessories, and custom configurations can be used to achieve more tailored outcomes.

As the session progressed, the focus extended beyond prescription to long-term client outcomes.
Attendees were encouraged to take advantage of Unicare's free in-home trial services to ensure equipment is appropriate before final recommendations are made, alongside the importance of ongoing servicing and maintenance.

Unicare Health’s support team shared practical insights into equipment care, warranty considerations, and the importance of good preventative maintenance habits.

The discussion also highlighted how low-cost assistive technology, such as shower mats and hygiene aids, can complement larger equipment to create safer and more functional bathroom environments.

For clients unable to attend a showroom, Unicare's Showroom at Home™ service was presented as a practical solution, enabling low-cost AT equipment trials within real home settings across Perth and Sydney.
The morning concluded with case-based learning, where participants applied clinical frameworks to real-world scenarios.

This provided an opportunity to translate theory into practice and refine clinical decision-making.

The lunch break provided a valuable opportunity for attendees to connect more informally with presenters and the Unicare Health team.

Conversations continued throughout the room, with clinicians asking follow-up questions, discussing complex cases, and exploring how the morning’s learning could be applied in their own practice settings.

Outside in the carpark, attendees were invited to step into the Showroom at Home van, which was on display for the day. This gave clinicians a firsthand look at the bathroom mobility products available in the mobile showroom van, which can be brought directly into clients’ homes for a trial. It’s particularly valuable for clients who have difficulty leaving home to trial products in a showroom, as well as those who want a real-world understanding of how the equipment fits into their environment and daily routine.

Following lunch, the focus expanded to the systems we have in place that support clinical practice.

Attendees were introduced to the myUnicare platform, which enables therapists to manage care for their clients in an instant. With MyUnicare, therapists can enjoy instant access to discount pricing when browsing products, create instant quotes, get instant visibility across past orders, and receive instant booking confirmation for trials.

The Rental team also presented on the availability of hire equipment, including shower commodes, highlighting how rental pathways can support trials, short-term needs, and transitional care.

The afternoon sessions brought in specialist perspectives from across Western Australia.

Michael Brown, Director of Aces High Plumbing and Gas, shared his expertise in bidet prescription and installation, focusing on matching features to client needs while considering installation requirements and long-term reliability.

Max Macknish from TADWA then led a session on bathroom modifications, drawing on experience delivering projects across Perth and regional WA.

He explored how clinicians can assess when modifications are required, develop clear scopes of work, and collaborate effectively with builders.

A strong focus was placed on navigating NDIS pathways for low-cost, minor, and complex home modifications, ensuring recommendations can be translated into funded and achievable outcomes.

The day concluded with a practical design activity, where participants worked through spatial challenges and developed bathroom layouts aligned with Australian Standards.

Across the day, a consistent message emerged. Effective bathroom outcomes rely on the integration of assistive technology, environmental design, and person-centred clinical reasoning.

For clinicians working across Perth and Western Australia, building confidence in this space is essential to supporting people to remain safe, independent, and dignified at home.

Unicare Health continues to deliver clinical education and training opportunities across Australia, supporting therapists with the knowledge, tools, and services needed to achieve better outcomes in practice.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for this learning day, and especially to Max and Michael for sharing their incredible expertise with the room.
