Therapists learn how to reduce the complexities of shower commode scripting with Unicare
Workshop: Shower Commode Scripting Solutions
– Addressing postural challenges with functional strategies
Technology Park Function Centre, Bentley
Thursday, 23 February 2023
- When do we consider a wheeled shower commode?
- How to balance under prescription vs over prescription?
- What are the differences to consider when prescribing shower commodes for clients who can stand and pivot and those who can stand and walk?
There was so much to teach and so much to learn!
The goal of this workshop was to provide occupational therapists (OTs) with the opportunity to become more familiar with shower commodes - particularly the JUVOcare shower commode range - and learn how to become more knowledgeable prescribers of these products.
Annette Terranova, clinical educator and Trainer at Unicare Health, shared a wealth of knowledge and experience with OTs looking to improve their shower commode prescription skills.
“The most expensive shower commode is one that sits in a garden shed or store room and never gets used.”
“Why does this happen?” she asks.
“Prescribing the right shower commode for the right job can make a significant difference to someone’s life.”
“What do we need to know to be able to do this?”
Annette outlined 12 main tasks of a wheeled shower commode and taught clinicians what to look for when determining a client’s need for a wheeled shower commode.
She taught clinicians what questions they should be asking and how to ask them.
She talked about the challenges of shower commode scripting and how to avoid the most common ones.
Exploring extensive range, Annette demonstrated the clinical features, use, and application of Juvo’s shower commodes.
She also introduced a wide range of accessories to customise commodes for maximum function, postural control, and comfort.
Crystal Chan, Unicare Health’s Occupational Therapist and Shower Commode Specialist, contributed to this session through some valuable demonstrations, showing clinicians how simple it was to use accessories to customise Juvo shower commodes.
She spoke about the extent to which a Juvo shower commode could be customised using a modular system of accessories.
Crystal shared many insightful case studies and taught clinicians things like when to consider an angle adjustable backrest and situations when a height adjustable commode would be appropriate.
Llew Pollard, Unicare Health’s Customer Relations Manager and Product Specialist, also shared his experience scripting shower commodes and provided examples of how and when features like swing away foot rests, height adjustable back rests and swing away arm rests were important considerations in the shower commode scripting process.
He also explained things like why Juvo manufactures a load bearing footplate and how such a feature should be considered for a client’s repositioning needs.
Annette also discussed situations in which the features of an electric shower commode could be extremely beneficial in meeting a client’s health care needs and manual handling requirements.
She spoke about how important shower commode trials are and provided OTs with a list of things to consider during trials.
This workshop provided a fantastic opportunity for OTs involved in prescribing wheeled shower commodes, to get up close and personal with the Juvo Shower Commode range and learn how easy it was to use accessories to customise commodes to maximise function, postural control and comfort.
