Unicare trains occupational therapists to become better shower commode prescribers

Workshop: Shower Commode Scripting Solutions
– Addressing postural challenges with functional strategies
Date: Thursday 24 February 2022
Location: Technology Park Function Centre, Bentley
Juvo Solutions is an Australian design and development company specializing in the manufacture of fully customizable shower commodes to meet the complex and changing needs of commode users.
Growing its global footprint in high quality stainless steel healthcare equipment, Juvocare is fast becoming the preferred shower commode brand widely used in Australian hospitals, aged care and disability settings.

This workshop provided a fantastic opportunity for Occupational Therapists involved in prescribing bath and toileting solutions, to get up close and personal with the Juvocare Shower Commode range and learn how to use accessories to customize commodes to maximise function, postural control and comfort.

Annette Terranova, clinical educator and trainer for Unicare Health, facilitated a valuable training session that covered the following topics:
- Mobile Shower Commode Prescription – what to look at and why
- Standard features and differences in models
- Seat Customization
- Using Accessories to enable easy and rapid customization
- Scripting a Mobile Shower Commode

From assessment to prescription to fitting and adjustment, Annette provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the Juvocare commode range and appropriate clinical applications of each model.

Attendees were given the opportunity to examine the clinical features of different shower commodes up close, as well as compare each model in the range.

This workshop also welcomed input from John Murdoch, Design Manager at Juvo Solutions, who presented excellent insights into shower commode innovation from an engineering and manufacturing perspective.

Annette reviewed the challenges of prescribing shower commodes and stressed the importance of accurate seating assessments for all stakeholders involved.

“Successful shower commode prescription is a holistic process that requires many considerations such as communication and understanding of a client’s disability and their environment, therapist experience, supplier support, funding approvals, trial opportunities, family and carer knowledge as well as ongoing functional decline. “

Annette discussed the unique features and functions of each standard commode and how to match client need to the appropriate models.

Attendees were given the opportunity to play with standard accessories available to customise commodes and understand how these accessories can be used to address postural challenges and promote maximum functional ability.

Annette often helps occupational therapists script shower commodes for complex needs and shared some of her experiences to show attendees how easily they could build up a standard commode using accessories to meet individual needs.

She also talked about situations when accessories alone weren’t enough to problem solve and shared some creative tips and tricks she had in her magic box.

She talked about commode seating evaluations and taught attendees how to customize seats using a custom seat specification form.

Attendees kept the workshop going all day with engaging questions and discussions, offering valuable feedback and sharing their challenges with funding, self-care requirements, concerns over Australian standards testing and more.
