A shower commode is a portable chair that is made of water-resistant materials and features a wide aperture in the base of the seat. It is similar to a wheelchair in design, and allows people with limited mobility to shower and use the toilet independently without dangerous transfers between multiple chairs. As such, shower commodes are a great solution for increasing safety and independence in the bathroom.
There are a few different types of shower commode that you may wish to consider. For example:
- Attendant propelled shower commodes have integrated push handles, which a caregiver can use to position the user over the toilet or in the shower. Â
- Self-propelled shower commodes allow users to manoeuvre themselves to the shower and toilet for personal hygiene tasks without assistance.
- Tilt-in-space shower commodes recline and tilt to provide comfort, stability and optimum posture for toileting and showering.
Unicare Health offers self-propelled, attendant propelled, and tilt-in-space shower commode chairs, all of which are manufactured by Juvo Solutions. These commodes come in a variety of sizes, up to a maximum user weight of 300kg.
We also offer shower commode accessories for customisation, like elevating leg rests, castor wheel extensions, stump support, alternate seating options, and potty chair liners to provide support for paediatric users. Â To discuss customisation options for your shower commode, contact us at Unicare Health or visit us at our Assistive Technology Collaboration Centre in Bentley.
When purchasing a shower commode, there are a number of things to consider, including:
- Weight capacity
- Seat material
- Removable vs stationary arm/foot rests
- Adjustability of seat height and tilt
- Rust-resistant materials
- Seat belts/straps to prevent falls
- And more.

A shower commode is a water-resistant and rust-proof chair that can be used in the shower. Shower commodes are mobile and have a large circular gap in their seats, which means they can be positioned over a toilet bowl for people needing mobility assistance. Meanwhile, a bedside commode is a portable chair that can be placed at the bedside and comes with a removable toilet bowl that can be cleaned after each use.Â
