Shower commodes are an essential part of life for many people who need assistance in the bathroom. JUVOcare Shower Commode Masterclass
– Addressing postural challenges with functional strategies

Assistive Technology Collaboration Centre, Bentley

Juvo Solutions is an Australian manufacturer that specialises in creating fully customisable Juvocare shower commodes to meet the diverse needs of users in hospitals, aged care, and disability care settings. At this masterclass, hosted by our scripting expert, Crystal Chan, attendees learned about effective prescription practices, including assessment, fitting, and adjustment. Crystal’s passion for empowering occupational therapists shone through as she discussed measurement techniques, best practices, and considerations for postural and pressure care, so that attendees could ensure functionality and comfort for the people in their care.

What is a Shower Commode?
A shower commode is a chair with an open seat that you can use while in the shower or positioned over the toilet. Designed to assist individuals who struggle with toilet use or standing for extended periods in the shower, shower commodes often come equipped with wheels to reduce the need for transfers and improve safety. The seats are made from hygienic materials that are easy to clean and typically feature padding for comfort. Depending on a user’s specific needs, therapists may recommend a variety of customisations for the seat.

When prescribing a shower commode for your client, there are important considerations to keep in mind. Ask yourself the right questions, such as:
- What is your client’s typical toilet/shower routine, and how does a shower commode fit into that?
- How does your client handle post-toileting cleanup, and are they at risk of developing pressure injuries?
Additionally, it’s crucial to ensure that the selected shower commode is suitable for your client’s environment, considering factors like circulation space and doorway width. Ideally, the shower commode should promote your client’s postural stability, skin protection, and functional ability while prioritising pressure care and comfort.

JUVOcare Shower Commode Series
Let’s take a brief look at the options available from JUVOcare. They offer a variety of models, each with its own unique features. For example, both their attendant-propelled and self-propelled commodes can be purchased with a non-slip sliding footplate or swing-away leg rests, depending on what suits your client better. They also offer height-adjustable tilt-in-space shower commodes, available in both gas and electric-controlled options. Crystal helped attendees to understand the features, functions, and advantages of all these options and how to select the right one for different users’ needs.

No matter which model you choose, JUVOcare offers extensive customisation options. For example, you can modify the design to adjust the seat depth or the size and position of the aperture. This ensures you’ll find a solution that perfectly fits your client’s pelvis and body measurements.

During our masterclass, attendees engaged in enlightening discussions about the features and functions of JUVOcare shower commodes. Crystal was happy to answer all of their questions, equipping them with the confidence to better handle shower commode prescriptions for their clients in the future.
