Unicare Health’s 2025 Shower Commode Workshop brought together a fantastic group of occupational therapists and physiotherapists for a dynamic and hands-on session focused on Mobile Shower Commodes (MSCs).
The workshop was led by Annette Dumble, our incredible Clinical Educator and Trainer. With over 35 years of industry experience, Annette delivers expert clinical training that empowers allied health professionals to become confident and proficient equipment prescribers.

Achieving the Optimal Prescription
Annette opened the day by highlighting the careful balancing act involved in achieving an optimal shower commode prescription. Therapists must weigh their client’s well-being, quality of life, and both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, all while ensuring the equipment addresses specific healthcare needs.

Before scripting begins, therapists must determine whether a client is eligible for a shower commode. Can the client stand and walk independently? Are they non-weight-bearing? These foundational questions must be answered first.

Annette explored in depth the 12 tasks a shower commode must support, alongside common challenges therapists face when endeavoring to achieve the optimal prescription.

The group unpacked intrinsic vs extrinsic considerations—intrinsic being internal client factors like diagnosis, body weight, and pain, and extrinsic referring to environmental or care-related aspects such as pressure care, support networks, and lifestyle.

Exploring the Range
With the goal of enhancing our attendees’ prescription capabilities, we took a closer look at Unicare’s comprehensive shower commode range and how, with correct scripting, these models can meet a variety of client needs.
JUVOcare Shower Commodes
As the proud sole distributor of JUVOcare shower commodes in Western Australia, Unicare Health showcased the full spectrum of this trusted brand, known for its adjustability and versatility.

We began with the JUVOcare 1000 Series – attendant-propelled commodes with sliding footplates and swing-away arms. Their compact footprint makes them ideal for tight spaces, as well as the one-piece sliding footplate.

Next was the 2000 Series, also attendant-propelled, featuring swing-away legrests and arms. These legrests allow for more neutral leg positioning, which is beneficial for clients with limited knee flexion. Their adjustability enhances comfort and clearance during transfers, and some models in this range are also height-adjustable.
We then explored the 4000 Series, JUVOcare’s self-propelled range. Functionally similar to the 2000 Series, but with the key difference being that they’re self-propelled. These commodes offer users greater independence, allowing them to manoeuvre the commode themselves.

Also on show was one of JUVOcare’s folding models, specially designed for travel. With removable seats and backrests, these commodes can be conveniently folded to fit into vehicles.

Finally, we introduced the 5000 Series – the JUVOcare Tilt-in-Space Commodes. These commodes are ideal for facilitating transfers and promoting safe manual handling practices. Their high level of adjustability ensures maximum comfort while maintaining safety and support.

Finishing the Build
Annette guided participants through the next stage of scripting – selecting accessories. When looking at commode seats, every detail matters - from the material of the seat to where the opening sits. Crystal, Unicare’s Occupational Therapist and scripting expert, shared her expertise and brought along a range of custom commode seats for discussion.

This opened the floor to a broader conversation about the variety of armrest, backrest, headrest, legrest, footrest, and body support options available to help therapists optimise their prescriptions and tailor solutions for complex cases.

Throughout the day, attendees engaged in lively discussion, sharing their own experiences and offering solutions for unique prescription challenges.

The enabling power of knowledge
By the end of the workshop, participants walked away with a renewed sense of confidence in prescribing shower commodes. They gained practical insight into the critical hygiene tasks a shower commode must support, and a deeper understanding of how JUVOcare solutions can be customised to meet each client’s unique needs.
