Seniors overrun Unicare Health’s #safeseniors booth at Have a Go Day Burswood 2022

Have a Go Day

Burswood Park
What an amazing event!

Have a Go Day celebrated its 30th Anniversary in the beautiful grounds of Burswood Park, and we were delighted to be among the 12000 participants who came to celebrate this premier event.

Have a Go Day, a LiveLighter Event, has been run by Seniors Recreation Council of WA (SRCWA) since its inception in 1992. It is the single largest event targeted at those over 55.

This free event features a mix of over 230 static sites and activities, making this event unique to Western Australia.

Seniors who attend, engage in a wide range of activities such as Hula dancing, rock climbing and canoeing.

They also visit many of the information sites offering information on health, lifestyle, and technology.

Have a Go Day is always a highlight of the WA Seniors Week calendar and widely known as ‘the Royal Show for Seniors’.

The event is designed to remind seniors of the importance of living lighter, which includes exercising, staying social, and keeping both physically and mentally healthy.

The SRCWA welcomed our Premier, the Hon Mark McGowan MLA, who officially opened Have a Go Day 2022.

Our Minister for Seniors and Aging, the Hon Don Punch MLA, welcomed everyone in his speech and congratulated SRCWA on a fantastic event.

Our #safeseniors booth was overrun by seniors who were keen to learn more about using Assistive Technology (AT) to adopt safer living practices at home and in the community.

AT provides practical solutions to help seniors do things easier and safer around the house. Some examples include mobility walkers, automatic kitchen gadgets, showering, toileting, and dressing aids.

The Unicare Health team enjoyed a busy day introducing seniors to and demonstrating how to use AT, such as bathroom safety products, helpful kitchen gadgets, and a variety of everyday living aids designed to help seniors carry out daily living tasks safely and independently.

Our #safeseniors booth is intended to increase older adults’ knowledge and understanding of AT, allowing them to make an informed decision about implementing these solutions to overcome healthcare challenges and participate in their own daily activities.

For instance, demonstrating how to use a tipping kettle to someone with Parkinson’s disease or finger arthritis will give them the confidence to safely make their own cup of coffee every morning, without the need to lift a boiling kettle.

Seniors had a great time discovering and learning about AT, such as using a button hook to assist with fastening buttons and zips.

Our #safeseniors booth also encourages seniors to do things easier and safer around the house, such as using an automatic bottle opener for tight fitting bottle caps rather than trying to pry it open with a knife.

We had a bustling time with seniors at Have a Go Day, listening to their ageing issues and introducing them to AT designed to help them overcome common ageing challenges like arthritis, falls, and Parkinson’s.

Many were amazed by the amount of intelligent AT they did not know existed!
Thank you
