On Wednesday, 13 November 2024, we proudly participated in Have a Go Day at Burswood Park, the premier event of Western Australia's Seniors Week.
Since its inception in 1992, this annual celebration has successfully brought seniors together, fostering a sense of community and offering a vibrant day with activities to promote health and well-being.
The day commenced with a heartfelt Welcome to Country, followed by the WA Police Pipe Band's playing the National Anthem.
Hon Don Punch MLA, the Minister for Seniors and Ageing, delivered an inspiring welcome address, commending the Seniors Recreation Council for their exceptional organization of this remarkable event. His words resonated with the attendees, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.
The Unicare team was thrilled to showcase innovative assistive technologies that empower seniors to maintain their independence and safety at home.
We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this event each year, as it allows us to connect with seniors and inspire them to stay active and confident in their daily lives.
Throughout the day, seniors eagerly engaged with various assistive technologies tailored to enhance their quality of life.
They explored kitchen safety aids such as automatic jar openers and can openers that simplify meal preparation. These one-touch devices enable seniors to perform tasks that might otherwise be challenging due to limited strength or dexterity.
Innovative home care products like the Uccello Kettle were immensely popular, particularly as our team showcased their benefits for individuals with arthritis or dementia.
Seniors also expressed great enthusiasm for learning about essential bath, shower and toilet aids, such as the raised toilet seat designed for comfort and accessibility.
Our team introduced reachers with different triggers and grab heads, demonstrating how these tools can help seniors easily access items around their homes without unnecessary strain or risk of injury.
Assistive technology such as tap turners can help to enhance the independence and quality of life for individuals with limited hand mobility by enabling them to easily operate faucets and other controls without requiring significant physical strength or dexterity.
Medication organizers can assist individuals in managing their prescriptions effectively, ensuring timely doses, reducing the risk of missed medications, and promoting adherence to treatment plans for better health outcomes.
Fall prevention socks, designed with non-slip grips, enhance safety for individuals by providing better traction on slippery surfaces, reducing the risk of falls, particularly among seniors and those with mobility challenges.
We were delighted to have Shoprider join us at our stall, where they showcased the latest mobility scooters from the IKON and Shoprider ranges. These scooters represent a significant advancement in mobility solutions, offering seniors greater freedom and independence to explore their communities.
The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many seniors expressed excitement about trying out new kitchen safety aids, sharing stories about how these devices could make everyday tasks more manageable. The enthusiasm was palpable as they navigated through our displays, eager to learn how technology could enhance their daily routines.
Unicare thanks the Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. for inviting us to participate in this event every year.
We also want to thank the hundreds of seniors who visited our stall and connected with us throughout the day. Your engagement inspires us to continue our mission of empowering seniors through assistive technology.
As we reflect on this year's Have a Go Day, we are reminded of the importance of community support and innovation in helping seniors lead fulfilling lives.
Together, we can ensure that every senior has access to the tools they need to thrive independently and confidently.
