Unicare Health guides occupational therapists through bed and pressure care mattress prescription
Quality sleep is the cornerstone of a happy, healthy lifestyle. For individuals with limited mobility, spending extended periods in bed heightens the importance of having the right support. The right bed and mattress prescription can drastically improve your client’s comfort, safety, and skin integrity by protecting them against the risk of pressure injury. Earlier this month, we held a training workshop to teach occupational therapists (OTs) about the key factors in prescribing electric profiling beds and pressure care mattresses.

At Unicare Health, we proudly offer a diverse range of pressure care mattresses, including options from globally renowned manufacturer Care of Sweden. Our range caters to a wide range of applications, from general use in nursing homes to more intensive pressure care requirements. Our recent workshop focused on educating OTs about the features of electric profiling beds and pressure care mattresses, aimed at enhancing client comfort and well-being. Ilissa Liew, our dedicated educator and seasoned occupational therapist with 15 years of experience, led the informative session.
Pressure care mattresses
Ilissa guided attendees through a wide array of postural, functional, and material considerations, enabling OTs to match the ideal electric profiling beds and pressure care mattresses tailored to individual clinical needs. The discussion delved into the selection process of mattresses—whether to opt for foam, air cells, or a hybrid composition.
The Optimal 5zon foam mattress, for example, is an excellent choice for general use in nursing homes and aged care environments. With its castellated foam and built-in heel slope, this mattress effectively treats and prevents pressure injuries up to category 2 while ensuring hassle-free maintenance.
For more substantial pressure care needs, a more dynamic mattress solution is recommended. Our Curocell® CX pressure care mattress range presents a simple yet effective solution, providing optimum prevention and management support for pressure injuries up to category 4. What sets the CX mattress range apart is the option to choose between the intelligent A4 and IQ pumps.
Using AI and high-precision sensors, the A4 and IQ pumps autonomously monitors the user’s weight, height, and position, adapting to individual needs. If the user shifts in position, the pump reacts and adjusts the contact pressure between the user and the mattress. The outcome is enhanced comfort, reduced risk of cell damage as well as decreased necessity for manual handling. This, in turn, simplifies the caregiver’s process, ensuring a smoother experience for all involved.
The IQ pump features a user-friendly design that prioritises simplicity and minimises human error. With its streamlined design, it maximises general care benefits and is particularly suited for high-volume care organisations, hospitals, and those who present with reduced cognitive function.
In comparison, the A4, a feature-rich pump, offers extensive options including adjustable cycle time settings. It also offers three distinct treatment modes – constant low pressure, alternation, and pulsation – each serving a unique therapeutic purpose.
Lastly, if you’re looking for a hybrid mattress suited for pain therapy, consider the CuroCell Cirrus. This is a high-quality pressure care mattress that is also compatible with A4 or IQ pump. Suitable for users weighing up to 230kg, this mattress effectively treats and prevents pressure injuries up to and including category 4. The Cirrus offers an excellent blend of user comfort, stability, and optimal pressure distribution, featuring eight alternating air cells encapsulated by soft foam.
