Unicare supports Edith Cowan University's occupational therapy course with seating and pressure care education

Seating and Pressure Care Training
Edith Cowan University, Joondalup
Friday, 6 May 2022
Unicare Health would like to thank Katrina Liddiard, Occupational Therapy Lecturer at Edith Cowan University, for inviting us to present Seating and Pressure Care education to 60 third-year undergraduates across three Assistive Technology labs.
Unicare Health’s Clinical Educator and Trainer, Annette Terranova, shared updates from the International Guidelines for Pressure Injury Prevention and Management and discussed the role of seating technologies in preventing and managing pressure injuries.
Her presentation reinforced what students learned from other assistive technology units covering seating and positioning assessments, seating interventions, and manual wheelchairs.
Annette enjoyed her day demystifying seating technologies and relating them to pressure care concepts.

Using Unicare Health‘s range of pressure care cushions, such as the Ansa Alova, Equagel, Action Pilot Gel and an array of JAY cushions, Annette reviewed cushion inserts and discussed the differences between gel, foam, air and combination cushions.

She also showed students how to build up cushions using the JAY Box of accessories to accommodate seating and postural challenges.

Annette also conducted a mini ROHO cushion workshop and discussed dry flotation technology. She taught students how to set up these cushions correctly and encouraged everyone to have a go with inflating a ROHO, sitting on a ROHO and performing a hand check.

Everyone enjoyed a fun time sitting on a range of Pressure Care cushions, looking inside the covers, squishing gel sacks, and setting up ROHO cushions.
Thank you

A big thank you to Katrina and the lovely third-year Occupational Therapy undergraduates at Edith Cowan University for having us at your assistive technology labs again this year. We enjoyed sharing updates from the International Guidelines for Pressure Injury Prevention and Management with you, and discussing the relationship between seating solutions and pressure care.
We are glad you had fun exploring cushions, taking JAY cushions apart, learning how to set up ROHO cushions and so much more.

At Unicare Health, we are blessed to be in working in partnership with a large community of occupational therapists who work tirelessly with us to better the lives of others.
We are thankful for the opportunity to embrace new partnerships through clinical education and contribute to an OT’s educational journey.
