Unicare's Allied Health Partners Master ROHO® Cushions for Optimal Pressure Care
Workshop: Hands-On with ROHO®
Friday, 15 November 2024
Technology Park Function Centre, Bentley
We were thrilled to welcome our friends from Permobil who delivered an enlightening workshop on ROHO® cushions for our allied health partners. Led by industry experts Tilly Brook and Nick Fraser, this hands-on session equipped occupational and physiotherapists with invaluable knowledge to enhance their pressure care practices.
ROHO® cushions have long been the gold standard in pressure care, trusted by healthcare professionals worldwide. Their innovative air-cell design, based on DRY FLOATATION® technology, provides outstanding pressure distribution. The interconnected air cells constantly adjust to the user's body shape and movements, ensuring comfort and protection throughout the day. This technology ensures optimal immersion and envelopment, maintaining blood flow and reducing pressure on high-risk areas. Over 90 scientific and clinical studies have verified that ROHO® cushions can heal, treat, and prevent pressure injuries, including deep tissue injuries.
Cushion Selection and Customization
Attendees learned how to select the ideal ROHO® cushion model based on a client's specific pressure care, postural, and clinical needs. Tilly spoke about the considerations for low, mid and high-profile cushions and how these different profiles cater to varying levels of pressure care requirements and support.
Material Composition and Clinical Applications
Tilly guided participants through the material properties of ROHO® cushions, emphasizing their impact on clinical applications. ROHO® cushions are made of soft, interconnected air cells that provide a low surface tension support surface.
This design allows the cushion to conform to the user's body shape and constantly readjust its envelopment to the user's movement during daily activities. The air cells' ability to distribute pressure evenly makes ROHO® cushions particularly effective for clients with high pressure injury risk or existing pressure injuries.
Comprehensive Product Overview
Nick compared various ROHO® cushion models, highlighting the distinctions between standard ROHO® cushions and options like the ROHO® Mosaic.
While standard ROHO® cushions offer advanced features for users requiring high-level pressure care and customization, the ROHO® Mosaic presents a more basic, cost-effective solution for those with lower pressure care needs. The Mosaic's lightweight design makes it a popular choice for travel, particularly on long flights. Additionally, its unique bottom surface with holes makes it suitable for use on shower chairs, offering versatility beyond standard seating applications.
Nick also presented other popular ROHO® products as the Adaptor Pad.
The ROHO® Adaptor Pad's flexibility and ability to be customized make it a valuable tool for enhancing comfort and protection in a wide range of situations. It can be cut to fit various surface shapes and offers protection for soft tissues on almost any flat or contoured surface such as arm rests, foot and calf rests etc. It is also useful for filling the gaps between the wheelchair and a cushion.
Attendees gained valuable insights into the clinical applications of ROHO® products, enhancing their ability to make tailored recommendations for clients with diverse needs.
Advanced ROHO® Products
The workshop also introduced newer ROHO® models, such as the ROHO® Hybrid Elite, designed to enhance positioning, stability, and offloading. The Hybrid Elite combines air cell technology with a contoured foam base, offering a balance of stability and pressure redistribution that many users find comfortable and effective.
The ROHO® Hybrid Select offers superior positioning and stability, plus the ability to offload by simply removing the IT air insert.
Participants also learned about ROHO® mattresses and ROHO® shower commode seats, expanding their understanding of the full range of pressure care solutions available.
Setting up ROHO® cushions
Attendees learned through practice how to set up ROHO® cushions and how to use the ROHO® smart check device.
The hands-on experience was both educational and enjoyable, as participants took turns setting up cushions for each other.
They practiced the "hand check" method, learning to assess proper inflation by sliding their hand between the cushion and the user's lowest bony prominence.
This practical exercise helped therapists gain confidence in their ability to adjust ROHO® cushions for optimal pressure distribution and client comfort.
By the end of the workshop, attendees had gained confidence in prescribing and setting up ROHO® cushions, widely regarded as the gold standard for pressure injury prevention and care.
We are thankful to all our allied health partners who came along to this workshop and hope that the knowledge gained will translate into more effective pressure care solutions for clients.
