Unicare presents new evidence-based recommendations to pressure care advocates in the South West
Seminar: Pressure Injury Prevention & Management
– Functional Strategies and Clinical Practices
Wednesday, 27 April 2022
Quality Lighthouse Hotel, Bunbury
Brimming with excitement over a collection of new evidence-based recommendations she obtained from attending the recent Oceania Seating Symposium 2022, our clinical educator and trainer, Annette Terranova, delivered another compelling Pressure Care education session for clinicians working in the South West.
We are delighted that our Pressure Injury Prevention and Management Seminar has established itself as a unique West Australian healthcare collaboration for all those involved in pressure injury care, with regional participation increasing year after year.
As the leading equipment provider to hospitals, aged care, disability and community providers across the state, we are fortunate to be working in partnership with major healthcare providers in an endeavour to improve the way pressure injury prevention and management is managed.
Increased pain and discomfort, as well as a decreased quality of life, are all associated with pressure injuries, as is an increase in morbidity and even death. Annette got up on her soapbox about pressure injuries and spoke passionately about a client who died as a result of heel pressure injuries.
Annette reminded everyone that pressure injuries can develop quickly, and stressed the importance of being intelligent about pressure care equipment to prevent and manage pressure injuries. “The most expensive piece of pressure care equipment is not always the best pressure care solution for an individual.”
She referred to the 2019 International Guidelines as a basis of best practice for pressure injury prevention and treatment and used this as a framework for her presentation. She examined definitions of pressure care stages, emphasised areas of high-risk development, and made sure everyone was aware of common risk factors associated with the development of pressure injuries.
Eager to share her new found knowledge from her participation in the recent Oceania Seating Symposium 2022, Annette discussed measures to consider posture, function and pressure distribution when fitting clients in different seating systems.
She also drew attention to the link between shear forces and pressure injuries that can arise from an array of manual handling practices.
Using Care of Sweden‘s range of pressure care mattresses, Annette examined clinical features and modern technologies for pressure injury prevention and management in bed, and made clinicians aware and intelligent about considering these characteristics for an individual’s pressure care needs.
She also examined a range of cushions designed for pressure care and introduced Permobil‘s all-new ROHO Hybrid Select Cushion that combines the positioning capability of a contoured foam base and air-filled cells for gold standard offloading of pressure areas.
Annette ended her presentation showing off new highlights featured in Sunrise Medical‘s top-of-the-range Quickie Q700 power wheelchair, demonstrating how the enabling power of technology can play a new and significant role in pressure injury care.
