Unicare Health's allied health partners become more proficient with manual handling equipment
As health professionals, it's common to feel uncertain when it comes to manual handling equipment. With so many options available, it can be challenging to determine the most suitable equipment for specific clinical scenarios. However, proper training can equip you with the confidence to maximise the potential of these devices, reducing the risk of injury and improving patient care. Unicare Health's manual handling equipment masterclass addresses this need, attracting a diverse audience of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals eager to develop their skills and deliver improved quality care.
Manual Handling Equipment Masterclass
Thursday, 2 May 2024
Assistive Technology Collaboration Centre, Bentley
The workshop was led by our esteemed clinical educator and trainer, Annette Dumble, who has over 35 years of experience as a clinician and healthcare industry consultant. Annette is a trusted source of expert advice and equipment solutions for occupational therapists working in hospitals, aged care, and disability settings. Her expertise inspired attendees, equipping them with practical knowledge to enhance their practice. Beyond guiding attendees through equipment features and benefits, Annette shared invaluable insights on:
- Objectively assessing equipment options to find tailored solutions
- Maximising equipment use for effective manual handling
- Understanding Australian Standards related to lifting slings
- Reviewing techniques related to slings, lifting hoists, ceiling hoists, and standing hoists
Understanding Manual Handling
Annette kicked off the session by highlighting the prevalent challenges surrounding manual handling equipment and procedures. She delved into the personal and environmental factors influencing their use, shedding light on common struggles. She also addressed widespread misconceptions about patient transfer procedures.
Annette stressed the significance of thoroughly understanding equipment to serve clients and carers in the best possible way. She also emphasised the necessity of thorough equipment evaluation for optimal outcomes. Throughout the session, Annette highlighted the importance of teamwork in ensuring a safe experience for clients and carers. To foster collaboration, she created a platform for clinicians to openly share their experiences with manual handling equipment.
Exploring Manual Handling Equipment
Next, we dove into a comparison of different types of manual handling equipment commonly used in healthcare settings. Annette highlighted Unicare’s range of lifting hoists, including the Ansa Sonata, Ansa Alto, and Oxford Advance, as well as standing hoists such as the Ansa Salsa and Oxford Journey. While discussing their suitability for various environments and scenarios, she reviewed their unique lift types and clinical features. She also gave detailed guidance on the use and suitability of each hoist for clients with diverse needs.
Next, we explored the features and functions of standing aids, like the Oxford Up and the Quickmove. Annette also reviewed the functionality of electric profiling beds, discussing how they can reduce the need for excess manual handling. Remember, each piece of equipment is only one piece of the puzzle! Improving your manual handling practices means understanding how your equipment works cohesively to create a safer environment.
Attendees were given hands-on experience with equipment so that they could discover its potential for reducing manual handling tasks. They learned the benefits of using a powered pivot frame over a manual option, as well as the advantages it provides to both the caregiver and the patient. They also learned how to read safety labels on slings, measure clients for the correct sling size, and correctly attach slings to lifting hoists, all while understanding the importance of seating and positioning principles in transfers.
The session concluded with interactive discussions and shared practical tips, inspiring attendees to apply their newfound knowledge in the field. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how intelligent equipment use can reduce manual handling tasks and optimise seating and positioning outcomes.
