A power wheelchair is a mobile chair that is powered by electric motors. It is designed to assist individuals with mobility issues and provide increased independence. Unlike manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs require minimal effort to operate, as they are propelled by an electric motor and battery system. They are particularly suitable for indoor use due to their compact and manoeuvrable design.
A powered scooter is a mobility aid with two or three wheels, specially built to transport individuals who have difficulty walking. These scooters have a top speed of 10km/h on level ground and are designed for single-person use. They are ideal for individuals who are mobile enough to operate a small vehicle but struggle to walk long distances due to disability or health issues.Â
The main differences between a powered scooter and a power wheelchair lie in their design and functionality. Power wheelchairs are compact and manoeuvrable, making them better suited for indoor use. They offer the benefits of a traditional wheelchair with the ease of an electric motor, making them ideal for individuals with limited arm, hand, or upper body strength or movement.
On the other hand, powered scooters are designed for individuals who are mobile enough to operate a small vehicle but have difficulties walking long distances. They have a larger wheelbase for stability and are more suitable for outdoor use, with the ability to navigate uneven terrains.
There are some powered scooters and power wheelchairs which you can purchase out-of-pocket without an OT assessment However, if you would like to purchase a more specialised model or make use of funding from your home care package, you will need an OT assessment. This may include a comprehensive assessment process, including a medical evaluation and functional assessment of activities of daily living (ADLs). These assessments are conducted by suitable assessing health providers who will determine your specific needs and recommend the appropriate mobility aid. This ensures that the chosen device is tailored to your individual requirements and promotes optimum safety and mobility.
